Liquid Crystal Research Laboratory

Preamble

Bannari Amman Institute of Technology situated at Sathyamangalam is equipped with latest infrastructure and imparting technical education and serving the needs of the National and International students. Research activity is one of the missions of the Institute. Liquid Crystal Research Laboratory of Bannari Amman Institute of Technology (LCRL - BIT), established in 2004 and nested in the Electronics and Communication Engineering department, possess a state of art in the latest and challenging field of Liquid Crystals. This research laboratory is equipped with most sophisticated imported equipment enabling to carry out the research in the frontier areas of Liquid Crystals.

Summary of the Project

This proposal deals with the synthesis and characterization of new class of achiral liquid crystals. Synthesis involves novel design of achiral mesogens so that properties relevant to display devices (viz., spontaneous polarization, response times, and contrast ratio) can be optimized. Further, a series of these new crystalline compounds will be synthesized and their properties will be evaluated.

Objectives of the proposed project

To design and synthesize new class of achiral mesogens

To measure simultaneously the spontaneous polarization and response times from the polarizing profiles

To identify other sub-phases like antiferroelectric, ferrielectric from the current polarizing profiles

Summary of the Project

This proposal is continuation of the just concluded DRDO project where achiral liquid crystals were studied in detail. The results obtained yielded information of some of the mesogens which can be further studied for device applications. In this brief project extensive physical and chemical characterization work of the achiral liquid crystals will be undertaken.

Physical and chemical characterization of selected achiral mesogens exhibiting ferroelectric properties
To evaluate these mesogens performance for display device utility.

Summary of the Project

This proposal deals with the synthesis and characterization of class of achiral liquid crystals exhibiting ferroelectric phase. Corelation of the chemical structure to that of the physical properties will be attempted. Physical properties like spontaneous polarization, response times, and contrast ratio can be optimized with alteration in the chemical structure of the compound.

Objectives of the proposed project

To design and synthesize of achiral mesogens exhibiting ferroelectric properties

To co-relate the physical properties to the chemical mesogen structure

To exploit the utility of these mesogens in the display devices.
